Jorge Lorenzo Sets the Best Time in Friday’s Practice at Phillip Island Despite Crash

The MotoGP FP session at Phillip Island, Australia on Friday, October 17th belonged to Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo, who set the best time despite crashing in the afternoon session. The newly World Champion Marc Marquez and Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone were the other two riders, who set the best pace in a chaotic day after Lorenzo. Given that Iannone too suffered a crash during the Free Practice 2. The Misano race winner Valentino Rossi was not able to show his true skills in this session, as he set the fifth best time during the practice.

In contrast, Andrea Dovizioso of Ducati showed better performance and set the fourth best time during the day. Aleix Espargaro of NGM Forward Racing also managed to end the session well by finishing inside the top six. The top ten was rounded by Ducati Team’s Cal Crutchlow, Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Pol Espargaro, Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Yonny Hernandez and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.

It seems that by setting the fastest time in Australia, Lorenzo has validated his teammate’s doubt. Rossi, who is tied on the points table with Pedorsa for the runner-up position, had said a few days ago that it’s Jorge who is the real threat for him. The Doctor said so because Lorenzo has won the last two Grand Prix and now he is just three points behind Rossi and Dani in the overall standings.

Valentino said in Japan that the second place contest is between him, Lorenzo and Pedrosa and he is anxious because his teammate is quite fast. He also said that though he love the circuits in Philip Island and Sepang, but competing in back to back three races is very difficult. In such case, a good start is very crucial, said the Yamaha rider.

So if Lorenzo carries on with the same momentum in Sunday’s race at Philip Island, it is quite likely that he may notch the runner-up position from Dani and Rossi. The two riders will already be feeling the heat as they did not do too well in Friday’s practice session. Still one cannot completely rule Dani and Rossi out of the contest. The two premier class racers had managed to end up on the podium in spite of not doing so well in the practice sessions.

Besides Rossi and Dani, the double premier class world champion Marquez can also give a tough fight to Lorenzo, Rossi and Dani. In spite of the fact that he has already seized the title and now he is looking to have more fun. So keep your fingers crossed and wait for another exciting round of the 2014 MotoGP season.
