Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez needed just one more victory to break the all-time record of great Italian rider Giacomo Agostini on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Unfortunately, his own teammate Dani Pedrosa shattered his dream by winning the Czech Republic MotoGP round in Brno. That’s not all, Marquez also failed to make to the podium for the first time in the season. Thanks to the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP pair Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi that did not allow the 21-year old rider to come forward. The duo finished the race in second and third place respectively. As a result, for the first time in 2014 Marquez had to settle for the fourth place.
On the other hand, Pedrosa finished the 22-lap race in just 42 minutes 47.800 seconds, but it was not an easy win, as the rider did not get an ideal start. This gave Yamaha’s belligerent rider Lorenzo a chance to lead all the riders, but Pedrosa soon gained the momentum and outshined Rossi’s partner on lap 6. Afterwards Jorge never got a chance to give Dani a tough time, as the Honda rider went on to win his first race of the season.
Reflecting on the race, Pedrosa said that he never planned the race in the way it has ended, but fortunately for him Lorenzo created a gap. So immediately I changed my plan and then pushed to the limit, said Dani. On this occasion, Pedrosa admitted that he was struggling in the last phase of the race due to rear grip because of which he was not able to go out in the corners in full swing.
Lorenzo also shared his thoughts after the race by saying that finally they were able to beat Marquez, but unluckily it was not him this time. He also said that after first two laps he never felt as good as he felt in the first lap as a result Pedrosa overtook him and went ahead. He added that his bike was not too bad in the last phase of the race so he made an effort to outstrip Pedrosa, but by then it was very late.
Marquez, who made a sluggish start at Brno like most of his previous races, drop down to the sixth position. Though, later he made a move and seized the third place, but Rossi gave him a tough time. Consequently, Marc not only failed to reduce the gap between him the leaders of the race, but also lost third position to the doctor, as Rossi breezed past him in the middle of the race.
With this Marquez successful run came to an end. However, he is still at the top in the standings with 263 points and a big lead of 77 points over second positioned Dani and 90 points over Rossi. Marquez has won the opening 10 races of the 2014 season and he was just one victory short of setting a new world record, as no rider has so far won first 11 races in a premier class season. In fact, when Agostini won opening 10 races during 1968, the season was comprised of 10 rounds only.
After the defeat, many thought that perhaps Marc has lost the touch, but the Repsol rider smashed all such assumptions in a post-race test at Brno on Aug 18th. The Spaniard set the fastest lap time at the Czech Republic circuit when he got to ride the 2015 bike of Honda. So it will be interesting to see him riding in the next round of the MotoGP in Great Britain.
